Tiger Mom

The other week, in my English class we were discussing topics and whatnot probably related to English. As usual, we often get off topic talking about all sorts of cool topics. I have not the slightest clue on how it was brought up, but one topic we started discussing was “Tiger Moms.” Now, I know what you’re thinking, and no it’s not another term to describe cougars. Apparently it’s a term to describe a stereotypical Asian mother/ parent; one that is really hard on their child about schoolwork and grades whatnot. Tiger parents are ruthless, willing to take down any friend wanting to hangout with their child, getting in the way of his studying. Just like a tiger in the wild, pouncing with great force to kill a gazelle. They are determined to make sure their child gets the best grades. Their child WILL be a doctor, engineer, or whatever else is really hard. Their child will have NO social life. Their child will BEARLY have any friends. Their child will NOT know who Scooby-doo is. Their child will NEVER catch a Pokémon. Their child will never find NEMO! Their child will never ALMOST catch Santa.Their child will get ONE cupcake for their birthday, IF and ONLY IF, their child did their math homework....IN THIR-TEEN LANUAGUES! Their child will never understand FUN.
But seriously, apparently one “Tiger Cub” got a full scholarship to Harvard.. Now that’s impressive. Must be an extremely smart girl. She will defiantly grow up to be someone important, like being credited for the creation of Pokémon, or the maybe even the new House, hopefully minus the limp. That’s awesome. But at what expense was this achieved? The girl probably had ONE friend sleep over her house one time, and that was if she did some ridicules overboard schoolwork thing. She had no social life most of her life. For the best part of her life. For what should be the best part of everyone’s life… They’re childhood.
Mary (In effort to avoid having to call her “the girl” 47 times, I’ve decided to name her Mary) may have a full ride to one of the very best schools in the nation, but it cost her childhood, and that’s a huge sacrifice. One that I don’t believe is worth it. Mary was deprived of getting to experience truly being a kid. From playing outside with the kids in your neighborhood in 3rd grade to going to the movies with friends as a teenager, Mary never had a chance to do these things. While all the other kids were out having fun, Mary was inside, discovering that the square root of a negative number is called an Imaginary Number. That was her fun, or at least the most fun a Tiger Cub can have. Whilst other kids had imaginary friends, our poor cubs had imaginary numbers. But a child’s childhood is the most important part of their life. You only get the gift of childhood once, and then it’s over. Then you get to know wonderfulness of responsibilities. Responsibilities like having to work for a living and taking care of others. Being a kid is the only time someone will get to live life completely under the care of their parents, having fun, experiencing the world for the first time, forming likes and dislikes. Getting a pleaser to be a kid only comes around once, so don’t let these kids miss their opportunity.
For only 5 $ a day you can save these poor Tiger Cubs, and give them more fun than they can imagine having, with numbers..

  1. I also agree that the way these 'cubs' are raised isn't right. There is no balance in their lives.
